Skid Pallets: Info On Some Available Options
Skid pallets are a staple of any warehouse operation. They just make warehousing easier from storage, moving, and transport perspectives. There are a number of different types but the commonality, regardless of whether or not you use metal, wooden or plastic skid pallets is that they allow for easy and safe transport and storage of materials.
What is a skid?
A skid or pallet is a structure that allows for the storage and transportation of goods. They are varied sizes and some companies have standards on what sized skids they will accept due to their own internal logistics. Instead of a company having to manually move odd shaped boxes, a skid, also referred to as a pallet, allows them to package and move things in the same size. This makes it easier for loading racks or shelves and for storage as well as for moving goods for the purposes of transportation.
What types of skid pallets exist?
There isn’t a standard type of pallet and various industries as well as various countries have varied options available so companies that store products from multiple locations need to be able to adapt to various sizes from storage and a transportation perspectives. Pallet options are varied and the most popular options include: wood, plastic, and steel. Pallet trucks or forklifts often move them around and they are typically loaded with items and secured with straps or shrink wrap so that the material on them is stable. Pallets often have a bottom that enables them to be securely lifted by a pallet truck.
Knowing which type of skid is right for your business depends on many factors. There are pros and cons to using wood, plastic, and steel.
Wood:
Wood is inexpensive but prone to splitting. Wood is unfinished and is susceptible to the elements so many not last as long as more durable materials.
Plastic:
Plastic is also inexpensive and easy to stack. Various sizes and shapes are available. But on the con side, plastic may or may not be as strong as some other substances. It’s often used when materials for transport, stacking, and storage are lightweight.
Steel:
Steel skids are durable, can withstand quite a bit of weight and are often weather resistant. They are heavier to lift and are more expensive.
Skids can be lifted onto warehouse racking or could be used in lieu of racking, depending on the configuration. Stacking several of them can often save space and reduce or eliminate the need for storage racks.
How do you get them? Where do you buy them from?
You may buy pallets on your own at times, depending on what business you’re in. Sometimes they will be included with products that ship to you. You may choose to recycle and reuse them or you may also dispose of them as well. Some companies opt to have them recycled and call companies to pick up used and / or damaged skid pallets as well as to do exchanges. There may be a good reason to look for new options as this could help you increase the productivity smooth out the logistics of your operation.
